Fat isn’t the enemy, it’s our friend… more than a friend.

We can’t live without fat.

There are three primary nutrients, called macronutrients. You’ve all heard of them. They are:

  • Proteins, most commonly found in meats.
  • Carbohydrates, or carbs, which are the sugars and starches.
  • And… fats.

Do you remember, from science class, that the fats we eat are, technically, called Essential Fatty Acids? Why do they have the word “Essential” in their name?  Because, we can’t live without them.  They are necessary for body function and for the absorption of vitamins.

Fats are essential to our life… but, remember, there are no essential carbs!

For most of human history, our primary fuel was fats.  Before our prior generations turned to grains and agriculture as the basis of our diets, our ancestors ate mostly fat.  Or, at least, they tried to and they valued the fats they could get.  When they killed an animal, the first thing they ate were the organs and other fatty tissues.  The lean meats were actually considered less desirable and were fed to the dogs. Boy, how we’ve changed…

For most of us in the modern world, our diets have morphed into a carbohydrate-based “life” filled with increased heart disease, diabetes, obesity, inflammation, and a myriad of other diseases and afflictions.  And, sadly, this change has been driven by the big food industry and bad government advice.

For years, we’ve been told that eating cholesterol and fats is bad for us.

This is based on the observation, years ago, that increased blood cholesterol was correlated with heart disease.

So (based on bad science) the medical, pharmaceutical, and nutritional communities told us to limit our intake of fats and cholesterol.  As our nation complied, our communal health worsened.

The reality, though, is that high blood cholesterol usually happens because our bodies make cholesterol when we don’t eat enough of it!

Thankfully, more and more science is shining a light of truth on the healthy benefits of good fats.

While not always popular,  especially with those who have been telling us (wrongly) that fats are bad, reliable studies and reports are adding to the evidence that a fat-based diet is better for most people.   Did you know that the US government recently changed its stance on cholesterol?  While you most likely never saw this in the news, or heard it from your doctor, the official policy is now “Cholesterol is not considered a nutrient of concern for overconsumption.”

High-fat, low-carbohydrate diets have been used by endurance athletes, to increase their performance, by doctors, to treat epilepsy and diabetes, and by millions worldwide, to increase their health.  We are among that group of “fat eaters” and we live a ketogenic lifestyle.

We just plain feel better when we eat fewer carbs!

It’s not a fad, it’s not a diet… for us, it’s a way of healthy living.
